“A Cousin is a Little Bit of Childhood that Can Never be Lost” – Marion C. Garretty
Not just anyone gets to claim their cousin as their best friend – along with the childhood memories, family pictures and life in general to prove it.
I always thought about how awesome it would be to have an older sibling but lucky for me, my mom decided to push me out into the world first so there was never a chance of having an older someone to look up to– not even when she remarried and the family grew with step siblings – I was still the oldest…it never seemed to fail! After hopelessly dreaming, I got a best friend, just not in the way I expected.
So as I sit here and Girl Crush it on Tuesday and National Cousins Day at that, let me share with you that my cousin Haley is fierce, she is strong, a go-getter, a mother and business woman. I truly do not know how she does it all, I wish I knew her secrets! For me, my cousin is literally my best friend. Maybe the saying is right, that God made us cousins because our mothers could not handle us as sisters??
Of course we had our ups and downs growing up – when someone had more money to spend at Mall Madness, when someone got a new Polly Pocket, had more time on the Dream Phone, stole someone’s precious Tamagotchi – and it really got heated when someone got an American Girl Doll before you did.
Then when we hit our teens, aside from tormenting our younger sisters, we had our differences too; but today, I am more grateful than ever for our relationship and friendship.
A mother of three children all under the age of five, (and let’s not forget about the dogs, ducks and bunnies :)), I don’t know how she does it. In my eyes, she is the real-life Super Woman, just ask her son, aka ‘Flash.’
It is true, whether people want to accept it or not that high-school friendships come and go and as time passes, some of those friendships drift a part – but cousins…always stay close to the heart. I know Haley will love me forever, no matter my flaws, mistakes and oopsies and the same goes right back to her!
Trust me; family gatherings are always way more fun when you can hide out with your cousin, with of course a glass of wine in hand. And don’t worry; you don’t have to explain the most embarrassing stories and insanity of your family because we both COMPLETELY understand.
To this day, I have a built in friend (for life) who will day drink with me, watch every season of the Bachelor/Bachelorette with, have bi-weekly pamper dates with, obsess over Target together, share the love of wine with me and even let me borrow her kids once in awhile 🙂
